I once had a jam-packed career writing food and wine articles, newspaper restaurant reviews, cookbook feature copy, and more. Then, everything changed. And here's why that's OK.
I can relate to picking up assignments by wandering the halls of ‘a large publishing company’. I was lucky enough to recover nicely from being downsized to being able to retire before the food editor profession was essentially eliminated.
I was hoping I'd hear from some of my former colleagues! I wrote this with all of us in mind. It was a great run while it lasted, and so great to work with pros like you, Sharyl!
I've been looking at these photos all my life and thinking I need to do something with them. They're so moving, and they tell such great stories. But I can't seem to nail the stories--in the way I got this one right, anyway. But thanks for the encouragement!
Sadly, more disruption is inevitable. Generative AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT and its ilk) can be trained on decades of cookbooks and food feature stories. Then - Presto! - "new" recipes! Just as, today, some foods are "Certified non-GMO," in the future we will see "Certified non-AI" as a way to guarantee the provenance of artisanal, human-produced writing and other creative works.
Very engaging. This is just right about Anna and the photo: “I marveled that she had had the vision to know what a weighty moment this was.” In addition to everything else, you can add she was a Visionary
I'm just so grateful our paths finally crossed and I'm gonna start taking mo' time to enjoy the stories you have to share 🍒❤️
I’m grateful, too! All best to you.
I love the family photos, along with how they relate to your life today. A lovely (and inspiring) post, Wini. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, Rachelle!

I want to see more of these images. You should do a coffee table book. I’ll help edit the photos. I would love to see them.

Well, that's scary. Especially for anyone in the world who wanted to make a living as a creative. Yikes.
Beautiful, Wini. ❤️
Thanks, friend!!
What an awesome story! The apples don’t fall too far from the tree. Thanks Wini
Thanks so much, David! I hope I take after my grandmother, somewhat! She was a character in so many ways ... and some would say I am, as well.

She truly was! Thanks for noting that.
