More on Richard Olney, including a few dishy things he had to say about M.F.K. Fisher, Julia Child, and James Beard. Oh, and a great salad recipe, too.
Yes! I have heard of him,and I'm a bit surprised you failed to mention that he was born in Iowa! I do not have his books; this post may have inspired me to find at least one!
I love it that he was born in Marathon! And that his brother really thinks he took Iowa with him to France. It made me proud!
Frankly...his cookbooks are a bit specialized. I mean, I'm not going to make a rabbit terrine any time soon. But honestly, that salad and a few other recipes in Simple French Food are worth it. And is food writing is so genuine. Closer to Julia than MFK, whom I suspect was a bit of a fabulist (even if I do find her irresistible).
We've talked about Richard some before, as he appears in Kermit Lynch's book where he wrote a preface. John Skerritt
That is on my "to read" list, for sure. Thanks again for remind me.
Hi Wini! Thanks for your invite; imagine my delight to find R.O.–a fave food writer–feature! Best to you and yours :^)
I thought this might resonate with you!
This sounds amazing. I have so much arugula, spinach and lettuce in the garden that I’m making salads several times a week. I can’t wait to make this!
Oh, it will be so good with homegrown greens! That’s also the Olney way!
I like it. Enough recipe to instill a start and direction then trust your flavors and ingredients.
Thanks! That’s the Olney way!
You introduced me to him. As a big salad person I am certainly interested! Thank you! 😊

Indeed! Good point. Though I did write about that "Iowa Connection" in my last post on Olney. See it here:
